How to Manage Hair Loss

Hair loss (alopecia) can affect anyone at any age for various reasons, although it is more prevalent in older adults and men. Depending on the underlying causes, hair loss could be temporary or permanent. So what are some effective and easy ways to manage hair loss?

We shed hair every day, on our pillows and in the shower. Though it’s impossible to count the number of strands we lose, we shed about 50 to 100 strands naturally on any given day and is usually unnoticeable. However, if you start to notice bigger clumps of hair, then it could be a sign of early hair loss. You can learn more about how our hair works here.

Hair loss is usually a gradual process that takes place over a long period of time. Detecting it early on can help identify the underlying causes and proper treatments. Here are some great ways to manage hair loss early on.

Well-Balanced Diet

Our body gets its building blocks from the diet we eat and a well-balanced diet with the right amounts of nutrients and minerals can help our body function optimally, and this goes the same for our hair!

Our hair is made primarily of a fibrous protein; keratin. Eating a diet rich in protein may prevent hair loss. Research has also shown that vitamins A, B, C, D, iron, selenium, and zinc are all important to the hair growth and retention processes, specifically with cell regeneration. Biotin, found commonly in eggs, is involved in fatty acid synthesis in the body, a process that is essential to the hair life cycle.

Good Hair Care Routine

A good hair care routine goes a long way towards managing and preventing hair loss. Having an appropriate shampoo and conditioner routine and choosing the suitable products can prevent any damage or inflammation.

Avoiding frequent heat and chemical treatments such as hair perms or hair colouring can give our hair and scalp space to thrive without overloading on the damages.

Exercise

You might be surprised to know that stress can affect our hair growth. Studies have shown that the stress hormone - cortisol can affect the function and regulation of hair follicle growth, leading to impaired hair growth or hair loss.

Exercise can help improve circulation towards the scalp and follicles, thus promoting a healthy hair growth cycle. So put on your trainers and roll out the yoga mat and get working!
