Reduced Hair Volume

Tips // Reduced Hair Volume

Reduced Hair Volume

Reduced hair volume happens when the quality and quantity of new hair can't keep up with the ones shed. The diameter of individual strands also generally reduce, resulting in thinner and finer hair strands that leads to lighter and less dense hair volume.

Our hair goes through a three stage growth cycle, anagen phase (growth), catagen phase (transitional) and telogen phase (resting). While it is normal to shed about 80 - 100 strands, reduction in hair volume can occur when that amount increases abnormally.

The good news (and bad news) is that hair volume reduction is a long process but this also means that it may also go unnoticed in the early stages.

Causes of Reduced Hair Volume

There are a number of possible factors that could lead to reduced hair volume such as an imbalanced diet, stress and other scalp conditions.

One of the most common causes is androgenic thinning where the follicles are sensitive to normal levels of androgens. With androgenic thinning, the anagen phase gradually becomes shorter and follicle miniaturization occurs, resulting in finer and shorter new hair growth with each cycle.

Another common cause is telogen effluvium when the anagen phase is cut short and more hairs cycled into the telogen phase, resulting in more hair fall than the growth can keep up.

Treatments and Ways to Manage It

Spotting it early on is key to managing it more effectively. Due to the fact that reduced hair volume takes a long time to happen, there's usually time for effective treatment to slow down the process and improve new hair growth with early detection.

Improved circulation is also very beneficial as it means having more oxygenated blood deliver the vital nutrients to our scalp and hair follicles, giving it the optimal conditions for healthy hair growth. Adding in a quick scalp massage in your hair care routine can go a long way!

Having a balanced diet with the necessary nutrients that are linked to healthy hair growth such as zinc, selenium and biotin can also help improve new healthy hair growth.
