Follicle Miniaturisation

Hair loss usually occurs over a long period of time and is usually unnoticeable in the early stages. During which, our individual hair may become finer and thinner in diameter, shrinking in size over time. This is follicle miniaturization.

Thinner hair takes up less space on the scalp, which results in reduced volume and visible thinning. Follicle miniaturization is a biological process where hair shrinks in size over time, eventually leading to hair loss conditions such as male pattern hair loss and androgenetic alopecia.

Follicle miniaturization can happen to both men and women, though more common and pronounced amongst men. It also usually does not happen all at once to follicles across our scalp.

Our Hair Growth

Our hair follicle growth cycle comes in three stages. A growth phase (anagen), a transitional phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen).

Anagen usually last between 2 to 6 years. The longer it lasts, the longer the hair grows.

Catagen is a period where the hair follicles renew itself. It lasts about 2 weeks.

Telogen is when the follicle rests and lies dormant. It usually lasts from one to four months.

In follicle miniaturization, the new hair becomes progressively shorter and thinner, unable to keep up and replenish the healthy strands that are shed, resulting in visible thinning patches.

In some extreme cases, the hair could become so thin and short that you can't see them.

You can read more about our hair anatomy here.

Causes of Follicle Miniaturization

According to the Foundation for Hair Restoration, there are three known factors for the onset of follicle miniaturization.

Genetics

Genetic predisposition could be a factor, the genes could come from either side of the family.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Hormone

DHT is an androgen hormone that studies have linked to follicle miniaturization. DHT attaches itself hair follicles that are genetically susceptible, making it shed prematurely and begin shrinking.

Age

As we age, some of our hair follicles become more prone to follicle miniaturization.

Another possible cause is nutritional deficiency where insufficient nutrition can weaken the hair and interrupt the hair growth cycle.

Treatments

Depending on the underlying cause, follicle miniaturization can be slowed or reversed in most cases.
